Outlook 2003

In Outlook 2003/XP, I suddenly have a non functioning inbox, now with 16 new messages that will not display.  I used the auto repair Office tool without any result.  I have disabled Norton antispam. after a message that it was causing a "serious error."  I also removed hotmail from the list of accounts.  So far, no go.  Please offer suggestions.  I suppose I can copy all folders, remove the program and reinstall it, but I would rather not do that if at all possible.  I can recover the unseen messages from my Road Runner account.  I don't have huge files stored in any folders.  I need Outlook for business.  Thanks......

Try setting up a new mail profile in control panel, mail and set that up as your Mail Delivery location in Outlook's Accounts setup--Tools, Accts, Change accts, 'Deliver new mail to the following location.'

Mary, I was hoping you would post.  I consider you the Outlook/Office ace.  I tried using the Office repair tool.  I can not use the Inbox repair tool because it can not find a valid file in Applications/...Outlook.  The Outlook folder has no .pst.files.   Thanks for your advice.

Go to Control Panel > Mail
On the next screen, click on Data Files
Confirm the path of the folder that has your default PST file
Run Inbox Repair Tool (Scanpst.exe) again and point to this folder

(make sure your Folder Options is set to show all hidden files and folders when you browse for the Outlook.PST file)

By the way, how did you disable Norton Antispam?  What was the exact error message?

I remember I had a problem with it when I tried it and had to disable its Outlook plugin before removing it altogether.

I did turn off Norton antispam with no results.  However, on completely removing Norton, 2008, a terrible piece of software, the inbox began working.  (I think.)

Thanks for that information.  I could not find a valid pst file to scan!

is the path same as that shown in the Mail icon in Control Panel?

I didn't install Norton Antispam at all - I had a lot of problems with it when beta testing NIS 2008 and NAV 2008, so I left that out when installing the released versions.

So far I've had no luck finding a pathway.  Search indicates a file in Application data, but it does not work when I try to open it in the tool.  I uninstalled and reinstalled Outlook with no help.  I can import the inbox files into OLXPRS.  When I go to Application data/Microsoft/Outlook, the pst folder is not there.  I'd appreciate any hints.  Does Open Office have an office Email client?  I do not have any huge files in the inbox.  This started after an error message in Outlook saying, " Norton has caused a serious error...."  I no longer use Norton.

Can you elaborate on "but it does not work when I try to open it in the tool"?  SCANPST doesn't open it, it just scans the PST file for errors. If any error is found, it creates a backup before attempting a repair.

    When you browse the folder

    C:\Documents and Settings\ [yourusername] \Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\

do you see any file in that folder?  To add to the confusion, PST files are registered as Office Data File when viewed in Windows Explorer, so you may not see the default OUTLOOK.PST file with its extension unless your Windows Explorer Folder Options is configured to show all known file extensions.

Perhaps that is the problem.  When I look for a PST file none can be found to open in the repair tool box to scan, despite the fact that I can find pst files in search.  If I type in the file it doesn't work.  In search, I show all files.  I'll take a look in control panel to be certain appropriate file options are listed.
