8100 boot problems

I've had an 8100 for quite some time now, and recently replaced the HD after many error messages at boot, saying HD not found. This would happen at least 50% of the time, and the other 50% it would boot fine. Even with the new HD it still does this, so it must be somethng other than the HD I'm guessing. Anyone else seent his?

If it only happens about half the time on two different hard drives, then I would guess that there is a problem in the connection between the hard drive and the motherboard or the IDE channel is going.

In either case, it may mean that a new motherboard is needed.

I take it that your system is not under warranty.  If this is the case, Dell's price will be rather high.

Sometimes http://www.parts-people.com/ will have them.  They do not at present time but you could keep checking back.

I would do some more checking before you go and buy a motherboard.  I would take the motherboard out and look for cracks or broken connections.

wow..didn't know they would be that expensive. Is it possible to connect an external HD instead?

You can hook up and external hard drive but unfortunately, the I8100 BIOS does not support booting from an external drive.

It can also be caused by the fixed optical drive needing to be reseated or by it's failure (remove it).

Your CDROM or DVD or what ever "optical" disk is installed.

    DVDRW, CDRW, etc.
