My CD drive program vanished off my computer :smileysurprised: Whats up with that? Now I have a perplexing problem, how to reinstall the program w/o a CD drive.??
If the drive does not show in the Device Manager then Windows does not know it exists. It is not a file or program that is missing; it is the lack of hardware sensing. There are two possible common reasons .....
The usual cause is a poor or no connection. Open your system and redo the connections at the back of the drive. Follow the flat ribbon IDE cable to the motherboard and redo the connection there also. Close the system and power on and see if that helps.
The second thing to check is to enter the Setup (BIOS) by pressing F2 at startup while the blue Dell is showing and check that the Channel the drive is connect to is ON or AUTO, but not OFF.
I have the same problem too. The only difference is when i go to Device Manager its says that "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"
OK I'll try those ideas next. After I close the store tonight.
One thing I noticed while looking in the device manager; is that the secondary IDE channel icon has an ! inside a yellow dot on it. In properties it says; Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19) Troubleshoot result;
Uninstall and then reinstall your device. If I uninstall I'll have no way to reinstall.

Look in the Device Manager .........
Start | Control Panel | System in classic view | Hardware tab | Device Manager
Click on the (+) next to DVD/CD-ROM drives. Right-click the drive and select Properties.
Is there an Error Code (number) present?
