CD Drives and Drivers

Hello, I'm having serious problems with my two CD Drives on my Dell XPS. I have a Samsung CD-R/RW SW-252S and a NEC DVD+RW ND-2100 AD drives. After upgrading to XP Professional (from XP Home) both of my CD drives have disappeared from my computer. They aren't in My Computer nor in the Device Manager. BIOS does recognize them but it seems that Windows does not. I have tried opening my computer and disconnecting the drives from the motherboard and reconnecting them, but Windows still does not recognize them. I have also tried driver updates from Dell, but they report that the drives don't exist. Is there anything I can do about this or do I need to get new drives?

    Try this Dell Article for Removing the UpperFilters and LowerFilters
    Values with the Registry Editor ................

    I already tried that and there was only a lower filter on one of the control sets. I did delete and restart but there was still no drives.

    i had a similar problem and i did a driver reset using the dell tool, however, now whenever i insert a dvd into my dvd burner it says the drive is a cdrw/dvd drive, and when i take it out it is a cd-rom drive

    Any ideas? Does it matter that I have two Virtual CD drives? Those two are appearing but not my actual physical ones.

    I fixed it! I was able to find on another post that led me to many different sites/places. I'm not guaranteeing this will work but it did for me. First off I would recommend setting a system restore point. Next, right click on My Computer and go to Properties. Click on the Hardware tab and go to Device Manager. Now find IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and double click on it. Now right click on Secondary IDE Channel and go to Uninstall. Follow through the next screen(s) and reboot the computer. Windows should reinstall the Secondary IDE Channel and should locate your CD Drives. If it doesn't work right you can always do a system restore. I hope this helps.
