i have a dimiension 3000 and have dvd drive. whenever i turn on the comp it ejects and then goes back in by itself. when i tried to put a cd in it, it would not stay closed and would not read the cd. is there any way to fix this without replacing it?
May I ask, what is the name/model of the drive(s) in question?
Also before trying anything else, do a thorough scan of your system for spyware, worms, viruses. Review this post from Dell Virus FAQ

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the difference. CD/RW Link
In my neighbors case - its with a slim CD-RW drive post re-installation of SP2. It was doing this before, but because her system was loaded with viruses we needed to wipe and start from scratch. Since I can't identify the drive, I don't know what driver(s) might need to be re-installed. I'm going to check it again on Wednesday, as she still has other issues to be fixed with a HP printer.
Seems like you can put some discs in and maybe only have to close the tray twice to get it to read from the drive using Windows Explorer. In the case of one disc from Dell (modem/fax disc) it kept ejecting it no matter how many times I closed the tray. The media was clean and defect free. As a test - I plan to reset the bios to boot from cd - to see if I can get the Dell disc to read once windows loads.
