Creating new boot hard drive

I have a Dimension 9150 with 320 Gb SATA hard drive.
I want to use this disc for video edit capture and install an older second SATA 160Gb hard drive (from my old PC) and use this as the C: drive to boot from.

I had no problem adding this old drive and used Paragon Hard Disk Manager v6.0 to create an exact copy to the smaller 160Gb drive. This program had difficulty making the copy in one go but I think I managed this by copying separately the areas (partions?) on the DEll C: drive which show as:
*: Primary, FAT16, Volumelable "Dell Utility", Active = "No", Hidden = "Yes"
C: Primary, NTFS, Volume lable (none), Active = "yes", Hidden = "No"
*: Primary, FAT32, Volume lable "DellRestore", Active = "No", Hidden = "No"

Now when trying to boot from this copy drive, having disconnected the original C drive and changed the SATA cable over to the 'new' drive so it is SATA-0, I get this screen message at boot:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
Windows Root\system32\hal.dll
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

I have looked on both the original C drive and my copy of this and both have this file listed. Can anybody offer any advice?

Thanks

    Thanks
The drive I want to use is a Maxtor, will I find the utility to copy on the Maxtor web site? Will this copy from the C Drive Dell fitted?

Copying the partitions separately is what did it. Redo the clone operation -- use something else like Acronis True Image (or, if it's a Seagate, WD or Maxtor drive, use their utility for the job). Clone the entire disc at once.

You can try a repair install (boot the XP CD, drop to a repair console) but I suspect re-cloning is the only way to go.

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:"

This message can also mean the drive cannot be initialized by the bios. Dead hard drives can return this message. I am not saying you drive is dead, but rather this message can be misleading.

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_haldll_missing.htm    some info here may be helpful, probably a boot ini file problem, since you did the partitions separately instead of a full disc image.

The only software I trust for complete image (all partitions, hidden or not) of a hard drive.

Posted many times on these forums, you do NOT want to buy a Maxtor drive.  Highly unreliable.

Did you look on the Maxtor site for the utility?

    Yes, it will.
