DVD and CDRW
Very dissappointed new Dell customer here. Computer and Moniter are wrong. Dell by phone could not help... promised a call back asap, then I call back an hour later and they are closed. DELL closed... I don't get it. Trying to navigate as a new customer is nearly impossible. The instant chat rooms are not working. All I can do is email and wait... and look to you all for an answer.
Question - Can a CDRW burn BOTH CDs and DVDs? I assume NO. I ordered the combo but did not get it, just received the DVD ROM and the CDRW. The woman on the phone did not know... and never bothered to have a qualified individual help me nor call me as she promised. Second question to you all... Is Dell worth having or should I just send everything back? I am disgusted with them at this point. The web site stated that Dell would not charge my credit card until after I receive the merchandise. I am not upset that they promised 3-5 day delivery and it took 6 days, but I am upset that they charged my credit card the same day I placed the order. It has been a week since I ordered and I have not received the proper product, yet I will be receiving a credit card statement for the wrong merchandise in a few days.
Sorry to go off on you all. I just hope someone tells me the future is bright with this organization. It really can't get much worse, though. The monitor is wrong and they only gave me half of the memory that I ordered. I will stop now. If someone can help me with the Burner question that would be great. I don't want to blame them for a wrong product if the Burner will burn BOTH CDs and DVDs.

Thanks for your response. I was pretty ticked off last night and vented on the forum.
The "misleading" that you refer to... it is very misleading, as I am looking at the advertisement that states CD/DVD Burner. That exact wording tells me that both can burn. If it was written as DVD/CD Burner, then I could see a debate from the advertiser's side, but the "/" still tells me both can copy.
Either way, I see that I am not alone with this, as you stated. I wonder why they will not change the way the present thier products if many people are confused by this.
In case you are curious, and I just know you are :smileyhappy: , it has been 14 hours and Dell still has not called me back about the issues. My email was greeted by a "tell me" query, while my original email stated everything. This is not fun.

This also depends on what you order. I have one system that has the DVD (reader) and CD-R writer combo unit.My new system has a DVD writer - that will also write CD-R's.Zin271

Jeff,Thanks for helping, but you are talking chinese to me. I am primitive and do not know how to answer your question about the drive. Hi Ron,
Right Click "My Computer" icon on your desktop,
Select Properties
Then Hardware tab,
under Hardware click on Device Manager,
then click on "+" next to DVD/CD-ROM drive.
The drives name should be listed there.

You my friend actually have two drives..
The JLM 166 is a DVD-ROM, (read-ony) here is the specs:

Jeff,
Thank you for showing me the way. You seem happy for me that I have 2 drives... I honestly don't know "what that means" to me as a user.
Anyway, Dell FINALLY got back to me. They emailed me saying that they are sending me another 256mb's AND a DVD RW. I am not certain yet as to how these items are going to find thier way into my tower... but it is progress nonetheless. I will believe it when I see it, is my approach at this point.
Thanks for helping me get thru this frustrating time.

Congrats on the outcome with Dell !
You never mentioned your Dell system, so hover your mouse over the Product Support tab above, then click on the User Guides link, next select System / Dimension / and choose your system / follow the next page or two, then select
Removing and Adding parts,
you should find instructions for your Memory and the DVD/RW drive.

Hi rrdjrpa,
I`ll answer your drive question first; A CD/RW drive cannot write "burn" DVD media, only CD-R and CD-RW media.
The Term "Combo" drive is often misleading to the new customer, in the industry it is / has been referred to as one drive that is a DVD(read-only)/CD-RW device, you are not the first to believe / assume it can write to DVD media.
If you can list the name / model of the combo drive, one of the Regulars here can look up the User Guide and confirm the specification for you just to make sure.
As for the other issues with your system, you can post in the Customer Care-General conference. Dell`s Moderators tend to address / cover this area frequently.
