How long to format a DVD+RW

I understand that inorder to use a DVD+RW the disk has to be formatted. How long should this formatting take? I attempted it one time and it was formatting for over 8 hours!!! and couldn't wait any longer so cancelled the process. Is there a quick format that can be used or does the formatting usually take several hours.

Am using sonic software on a Dimension 8400 running Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2/ with an nec 3450A 16 X dvd drive.

Thanks in advance for any input.

I've done these and it takes 15-20 minutes for a full formatting on several computers I've tried.

A DVD+RW disc does not require full formatting, and in fact may render a rewritable disc unusable after the first session. Just write to it, and if formatting is required, your burning software should take care of this automatically.
