Need Help With CD Drive
This is my first message I have ever posted so I'm not sure what do so here I'll give it a shot.
It appears that the drive in my latitude CP M233ST doesn't read cd-rw's. I don't know the model of the cd-rom module. And I dont know where to find it. And it also doesn't seem to support Digital playback. What's that all about. If any one can help it would be greatly apreciated.

Thanks for the cd-rw information ill give it a try sometime in the next three days b/c i have to go and buy some CD-RW's. The cd-drive is a TORiSAN CD-ROM CDR_U200. What I mean about the digital playback is that when playing audio CD's with the digital playback option selected in the system prefs it plays the cd but it screeches when playing. But figure this one out it plays like that right up until you make the cd skip then it plays fine. But when i disable the digital playback option it plays ok but very slow to start playing the disc. I had a Latitude XPi CD P150ST and it played CD's fine. Just not CD-RW's. CD-R's work just ifine in my Latitude CP.

Thats weird i thot i saw somewhere that they are 16X because i had a prog on my LT thats called audiograbber it said it was a 16X. thats weird guess that the program doesnt read the drive right.
PS. Do you know where i can get firmware updates/upgrades for that drive?

- The Torisan U200 is a 20x non-Multi-Read CDROM and is incapable of reading CDRW Formatted Disks. Not all of the CDROMs used with the CP were limited in this way, and the 24x CDROMS that succeeded the 20x all seem to be Multiread, and will read CDRW Formatted disks as long as the Roxio UDF Reader is installed. I have one of these 20x Torisans in my junk box and that is where it will stay.

Do you know where i can get a multiread cdrom for the latitude cp, (not anywhere online preferably)?- Not off hand. If you have that computer store, check with him/them about getting you one from ebay or elsewhere. A 24x is what you need. The Torisan 20x innards were a carryover from the previous Latitude LM and XPiCD models, and was not used very long before Dell switched to the 24x MultiRead units. The CP when first released did not have a bootable CDROM or inclusion in the Boot Order. Dell made a BIOS revision-around A06 I believe- to include the CDROM in the Boot Order and make it bootable. About the same time, the switch was made to the 24x units.

Your CD drive could just have problems reading that particular brand or type of cdrw media. I had a Samsung CD drive in an older Latitude CP 166, and it couldn't read those black colored Memorex CD-Rs, but could read the 48x silver Memorex CD-R's just fine.
Before you write off the CD-drive, try using different CD-RW media.
And could you clarify what you mean that it doesn't support digital playback? Are you saying that it won't play certain types of files?
Also, you can find out what model your CD drive is by checking the hardware profile. You can either right-click My Computer, select Properties, and then check out the Hardware or Device Manager tab. You should see a CD Drives entry there with the model # and brand displayed.
