primary partition help

i just buy inspiron 640m, and come with 4 partition,0 for the dell diagnostic, 1 for backup(D:), 2 for os(C:), and finally for the media direct. my plan is to delete the partition containing media direct then format it to a new drive, shrink 30gb from c: and combine the 30gb with the new drive, and finally install win xp on the backup partition. i use the vista disk partition to delete the media direct partition, and create a new drive. the problem is after format, the drive is considered as extend partition. therefor, i can't combine it with 30gb space which i shrink from c:. what should i do to make it become primary partition?

    The only thing i can think of doing is delete the media direct partition you witch would make it
    unallocated along with the other 30 gb both should be unallocated space then make one drive 
    out of the unallocated partitions , i am not sure how you make it a primary drive.
    And after you install XP it will not let you boot to Vista it will boot to XP you will have to do your home work and find out how to get it to boot both Vista & XP.
    Vista has a new boot manager that will be lost if you install XP after Vista .
    Then after you get both to boot you will lost the restore points in Vista when you boot to XP
    because XP thinks they are invalid and does away with them Vista does not do away with the XP restore points.
    OH by the way the D:\ is not for backups it is used to restore your PC back to the way it came from Dell.
    So are you sure you want to do all of that big question mark here just to have a dual boot.
