The new machine is also a 3000 - exact replacement - looking to just get data off the existing disk - not necessarily use it as an additional drive.

If it's a 3000, you can move the drive and its controller card (there must be one, since the 3000 doesn't natively support SATA) to the new system, and copy what you need.

Since you must have purchased the controller card and the SATA as an upgrade, make sure you're allowed to keep it - the 3000 would have shipped with an EIDE boot drive, so you must have two drives in the existing system.

If you were mistaken about the drive being SATA in your first post, and it's really EIDE, you can buy a dual-drive cable (the system will come with a single-drive EIDE cable) and mount the drive temporarily on it to copy what you need.

Initial drive was a IDE, new drive just SATA - will the SATA run as the primiary drive without the IDE, if I transfer data via an external drive

If the new drive is SATA, you're not getting a 3000 - you will probably get a B310/3100.

You can temporarily disconnect the CD/DVD drive and connect the old system's drive in its place, and copy what you need to.
