I have got a serious problem that I would love some help with. I took all my notes for all my classes at the university on my laptop, and being totally mornonic I never backed them up. With finals coming up this week, I am really becoming frightened. Now when I go to turn on my computer, I am given the option of starting windows regularly, using the last known working configuration, or booting in safe mode. Whichever option I chose, the result it exactly the same; after about 3 seconds of an attempt to load windows, I receive a blue screen that states the following:
"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error, screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask you hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.
If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.
So my main goal is to somehow extract the files that I need to study for my finals. Other than that, I have no problem formatting the hard drive. I considered attempting to re-install windows on another partition and then attempt to access the files from that new version of windows. However, I was down to about 400 MB of hard disk space available, so I doubt I would even have the room for a new installation. Any help that anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated.
I apologize for my neglect to inform you of my system specifics. I am running XP on an Inspiron 1100. I have made no sweeping changes that would bring about such a change in the computer. However, my computer refused to come out of sleep mode, which forced me to shut down the computer improperly by holding the power button down. I assume this is the cause of the problem.
One last thing ... I do not have a floppy drive. If there is a link from which I could burn a CD that would help my computer boot and function at least well enough to allow me to extract the files I need ... that would be great
You need to try booting from the XP CD then when you enter setup you need to press R for repair and this will get you into the repair console. You will be asked for a password but just leave the box empty and press enter on the keyboard. You want to run the command chkdsk /r
Hope that sorts you out but do post back whichever way it goes.
Thank you for your help. I followed your instructions, but have been unable to resolve the problem. Upon typing command chkdsk /r, my computer made no sign of life for about 25 seconds and then printed the statement: "The colume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems." Is there a plan B, or do I simply have to suffer the consequences of not backing up my work?
Some of your work may still be recoverable. If you have access to a desktop computer using Windows 2000 or XP then you can remove the laptop hard drive and connected to the desktop as a slave drive using a 2.5" to 3.5" IDE adapter. http://www.bay-wolf.com/hddadapter.htm
If you're not allowed permission to view a folder on the laptop hard drive when connected to the desktop then you'll have to take Ownership of the File or Folder.
