IT Assistant equivalent for SBS 2003

Hi,

I want to use a product such as IT Assitant to manage Dell clients (wake them up, get inventroy, and so) in an SBS 2003 environment.  IT Assistant doesn't run on SBS 2003.  What other Dell managment software can I use instead.

Thank you,
Bill Totten

    Thanks for posting!  You can install ITA on a Windows desktop system, and do the monitoring from there.  Bear in mind you'll need to install OMCI on the clients, and OMSA on the server, as well as OMCC on the ITA box.

    Thank you for the answer. Can you clarify what the acronyms stand for? I've got two of them figured out :)

    As a follow-up, I did install it on a workstation including the installation of .NET Framework 2.0, SQL Server Express 2005 and SNMP. I don't see any menu item for IT Assistant. Does that mean the installation may have been bad or is there a different way to run IT Assistant (e.g., via a browser)?

    A second follow-up; is there a logon script, already written, that you pass on so I can "push" the OMCI to the clients?

    Thank you,
    Bill

    IT Assistant runs on a browser.

    Acronyms:

    OMSA = OpenManage Server Administrator

    OMCI = OpenManage Client Instrumentation

    OMCC = OpenManage Client Connector

    If the installation is successful, at the end you should see an icon created on the desktop to launch IT Assistant (ITA). The interface of ITA is web-based, so double-clicking the icon launches the browser.

    Alternately, you could invoke ITA from IE or Firefox browser (from the same system or a different system if you want), with the address

    https://hostname:2607 - where hostname is the host name or IP address of the system where you installed ITA and 2607 is the default port number for its web server (unless you chose to use a different number during install). In fact, you could also invoke the browser from a Linux system, if that is convenient for you.

    You may also verify your installation by checking the services. Go to Windows Services (via control panel->Administrative tools), ITA installs the services "DSM IT Assistant Connection Service" and "DSM IT Assistant Network Monitor". Both should be "started". The first one includes the web server while the latter is the part of ITA that is responsible for Network Discovery, Inventory, etc.

    For the follow-up question:

    ITA doesn't have readymade capability to "push" OMCI to the clients. It can, however, push "OMSA" to the PowerEdge Servers (use ITA -> Manage->Tasks->Software Deploy task -> right-click and create New task).

    Thanks for the clarification.  I'll go on from here and see how it goes.
