Monitoring H/W
Hi,
We've just bought 4 Dell Poweredge R900's and I need to monitor them for h/w alerts etc. For HP servers I use HPSIM and for IBM servers I use Director. What should I use for Dell?
The server I have put aside for monitoring these new dells is a VM. I tried installing openmanage on the VM but it said I need to install it on a dell server, however I don't have a dell server spare for monitoring purposes, only the VM.
I've also tried installing Dell Management console (think it was called that) but it fails to work.
What free dell product can I install on a VM to monitor the new dell servers I have acquired?
Thanks in advance

Thanks for posting! You need to install Server Administrator (OMSA) on each server, on the root OS if it is a virtual host. Then you can install IT Assistant on the VM, though you will want to make sure the VM is on a server without much network traffic, or the SNMP traps that tell it there is a problem might not get through reliably. If you are only monitoring the 4 servers, you can put ITA on a 32-bit Windows desktop system and that will work just fine.
Look at the OpenManage tutorials on http://support.dell.com/enterprise_videos for instructions on how to download and set up OMSA, ITA, SNMP, discovery, and email alerts.
