Upgrade ESXI. Should I backup SD Card?
I'm upgrading ESXI from 5.5U2 to 6.5U1 on a r720. I have 2 internal SD cards in Mirror mode. Should I make a copy of one of those cards before upgrading? I was thinking I could put an SD card in the Front Panel vFlash and possibly get it to mirror to that card and then remove it. Or possibly turn off Mirror mode and do the upgrade. If it doesn't boot I have SD2 to switch to and if it does boot fine I could turn Mirror mode back on.
I did backup the config by this method:
vim - cmd hostsvc / firmware / sync_config
vim - cmd hostsvc / firmware / backup_config

You didn't really answer my question about method of backup.
Can I put an SD Card in the outside/front slot and rebuild to it?
Can I turn off mirror mode, then install the new version and that will protect SD2 from being overwritten until I turn mirror mode back on?
Or should I just replace SD card 2 with a blank one and let it rebuild and keep the SD card I took out as the backup?
I would rather not take the server out of the rack and open it, but if I have to I will.

Yes, you should always backup before making any hardware or software changes. It is also best practice to test your backup method to make sure it works. I would use a test system to perform a backup and restore. You should also document the exact steps necessary to perform the restore.
5.5 to 6.5 is a big jump, I would suggest that you review documentation before attempting this upgrade. There are likely many new features that you will not benefit from by performing an upgrade from such an old version. If it is possible, you may want to consider a fresh installation of 6.5 with the possibility of restoring virtual machines. I would review documentation on VMware's support site for suggestions and best practices.
