I know I have a virus, just not sure which one. When I boot up I get the following message:
Explorer.exe unable to locate component. I have no icons or toolbar. Before I was missing the wininet.dll file but have restored it. Not sure if it is corrupt though. Not sure of anything right now. I DO know that I am trouble...
i don't have the answers (nor "guarantees") for your questions... but it certainly can't hurt anything to try to generate and post an HJT log. IF your problem is software (virus/malware) - related, odds are the HJT forum people will be able to offer you some assistance.
I will download and post the hijackthis log when I get home (I'm at work). I guess I'm just trying to get as much info as possible. Does this sound like a familiar virus? Is it likely I can salvage or will I probably have to start from scratch and lose all my files?
Maybe it's too early to tell at this point? Will the Hijackthis log shed light as to what the problem is?
I've been doing as much research as I can and it doesn't look like there's a very high rate of success once this problem occurs. Is this true?
my Error message says App Failed to initialize (0xc0000022).
Thanks very much for looking at this!

My name is dobhar and I will be looking over your log. If you have any questions please post back as a reply to this Thread\Topic and I will be advised by email so I can return and help you. Do not start another Thread\Topic.
One thing I have noticed right away is that you are running HijackThis from your Desktop. Please make sure you move HijackThis.exe, using the instructions below.
*** IMPORTANT ***
You are running HijackThis from your desktop. HijackThis needs to be run from a folder on it's own and not from the Desktop. The reason being that if we get you to fix somethig with HJT it creates a backup. These backups need to be in the same folder as HJT so by running HJT from your Desktop you will have all these Backups there also. It's best to run the program from an actual folder. Please follow these instructions... Create a folder called HJT... 1. Open "My Computer" 2. Double-click "C:" or "Local Disk (C: )" 3. Right-click in an open area in that window 4. Select/left-click on "New" from the drop-down 5. Select/left-click on "Folder" 6. A folder will appear with the cursor blinking and the words "New Folder" will be highlighted 7. Name the folder HJT 8. Move the HijackThis.exe file to this new folder
Alternately you can download a self extracting copy of HijackThis from
http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/hijackthis_sfx.exe and save it to your desktop. Double-click on the file
hijackthis_sfx.exe file and it will self extract into it's own folder in
C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
Pls post a new HJT log from the new location. Once you post your new log please give me some time to go look it over and I will post back as soon as possible.
Thank you very much for taking the time to view this!
