-- l opened a firewall port and think a virus came in from there. I now don't have a taskbar, start menu, or desktop icons. I updated and ran my McAfee, but it found nothing. Any help??

Thank you very much!

    Download the Hoster from:

    http://www.funkytoad.com/

Unpack to your desktop and run it.  If you have green print at the top then just press Restore Original Hosts then OK.
IF you have red print then press make Hosts Writeable first.

    Get DelDomain.inf from:

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/restricted.htm  and then right click on it and Install.

Also download and install ccleaner.exe from http://www.ccleaner.com. Don't let
    it clean anything yet.

Shutdown and Restart and Boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key when you see the PC
    maker's logo.
Keep tapping until it tells you it is going to Safe Mode or you see the Safe
Mode menu. Select the top option.

Run HijackThis and just do a Scan only. Check then Fix
    Checked the following:

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=
    O2 - BHO: Media Playback Support Dll - {9D9A7350-46C9-4E3C-92EF-382B5740A1C3} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\bvicore.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Sygate Personal Firewall Beta] Sygate32.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Windows Java Update] weatherBug32.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [spdwnw32] C:\WINDOWS\system32\spdwnw32.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Sygate Personal Firewall Beta] Sygate32.exe

Run ccleaner.exe, uncheck everything on the first page except the two entries
with Temporary and then Run Cleaner.

Reboot into regular mode and install deldomain.inf and run hoster / Restore Default Hosts
    just to make sure.

Run another HijackThis log and post it as a  reply. Let's
    see how we did.

    Log looks clean now.

    Ron

Make sure you have System Restore running (toggle it off and On today to get rid of any bad stuff it may have retained) and then you can just go back to an earlier time if you hit a bad site.  One way to make this more obvious is to check everything in your current HijackThis and Add to Ignore List then set up Hijackthis to run at boot and to show you if it finds anything new.
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/systemrestore.mspx

To avoid going to a bad site you might want to install IE-SpyAd and SpywareBlaster and make the other changes recommended at:.
    http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/restricted.htm
I used to recommend Spybot's Immunize system but have recently learned it is not as good as the one at:
    http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
Never hurts to do one of the free on line scans from Panda or Trend.  They take a while but are pretty good.
    www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/activescan.asp?
    http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
    In addition to Microsoft AntiSpy
    http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/downloads/default.mspx
I like to run Spybot S&D.
    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
Also like to run AdAware once in a while.

    RON YOU ARE THE MAN!

I keep my computer baby's-behind-clean, but opened a firewall port for a program (my bad, I know). I think that's how this got on. I went to Illinois Institute of Technology last year and all of my Comp. Sci. and Comp. Eng. friends were next to no help at all, but you pimped this out! I truly can't thank you enough for doing this is one quit swoop for me, it's such a burden off my shoulders, esp. right around when school's starting up. The new log is below, but it seems like everything is back to normal. I really can't believe this! Thank you again!

    Matt
