Sec Thought.B

I noticed an icon on our screen called second thought and didn't know what it was for or how it got there so I deleted it. The next morning my virus scanner which is AVG 6  found 5 viruses and 4 of them could be removed to the vault, but the fifth one will not go to the vault the message that comes up is Trojan horse Sec thought.B will not move to virus vault. I traced it to C:\ProgramFiles\CommonFiles\SLMSS\SMLSS.EXE

I tried to remove the file and another message came up: Refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer,or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted,or that you are connected to the internet or your network then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location.

It sounds almost like an answer a politician would come up with.Any help on how to remove this from our hard drive would be appreciated.

Our system is Microsoft windows xp, version 2002, service pack 1,Dell dimension dim 2350, pentium 4 cpu 1.80GHz 512 MB of RAM. I don't know if you needed this information or not but I didn't think it would hurt.

Thank you ,

2david

Use these to remove Malware (Spyware and Adware).

    1) SpyBot Search and Destroy
After installing SpyBot Search & Destroy, first press Online, and search for, put a check mark at, and install all updates.
Next, close all Internet Explorer windows, hit 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds.

    2) Get Ad-Aware
After installing Ad-Aware, and before running the program, first press “check for updates now".
Click "Connect" and install all updated components available. Click 'Finish'.
Press "Scan Now", then 'next', and let Ad-Aware scan your drives.
It will find a number of "bad" files and registry keys. Click 'Next' again.
Check all found items, and click 'next' once more.
It will ask you whether you'd like to remove all checked items. Click OK.

Always reboot the computer between each program - both of these may find things that they need to have a reboot of the machine to clear - please reboot and let them finish .

Failing those solving your problems a post of a hijackthis log for the experts to advise.

Thank you for the advice on what to do. I downloaded IE-Spyad, Spyware guard, Ad-aware, & Spybot and the trojan horse never had a chance. Now the computer is working almost like it should. System restore is giving me a problem about not going back to a earlier date but thats on another board.

    Once again Thank you,
