VNX Disk Layout

Hi Guys- So I have a VNX5400 with

  • 65 (900 GB SAS ) drives , 24 (400 GB) EFD's and 3 (100 GB EFDs for FC).
  • One DPE (25 disk slots) and three (2.5") DAE's (25 disk slots each)

I'm trying to figure out a best way to layout these disks across shelves/buses so that they are evenly spread. Is there a best practice document that could help me?

Also when creating pools, is there any advantage of selecting disks from multiple DAEs on different buses (vertical) Vs using disks/DAEs from same bus (horizontal) ?

Any help is much appreciated!

Thanks

    See this doc :

    https://www.emc.com/collateral/software/white-papers/h10938-vnx-best-practices-wp.pdf

Spread the SSD drives evenly across both buses is about the only thing you really need to do.

No real benefit in vertical positioning of disks in RAID groups or Pools.

That's a nice inventory for a 5400, although I would have been inclined to get more FAST Cache generally.

One Pool ? How are you going to group the FAST VP SSD's ? Which ever way you carve it for best practice, it's odd. If you go R5 (4+1)*4  you'll have 4 left over which is too many spares, and if you go R1/0 (4+4)*3 you'll have no spares. (Although I usually consider R1/0 of SSD's overkill and a bit of a waste where R5 is efficient from a performance and capacity perspective.

    I assume you'll use the 900GB SAS in R5 (8+1)*7 leaving 2 for spares ?

As far as layout goes, I'd put your FAST Cache SSD's in the DPE and spread the remaining over the 3 x DAE's. As smarti said, no sense in vertical striping.
