Adding Memory

So I will need another gig of memory to run Vista. I have been shopping on the net and found 1 gig at Memory Ten for $90. It is DDR2 667 like I have already. It also says non ECC DiMM. Will this make a difference. Thanks in advance.   Chub ( computer illiterate bit willing and able to learn).

Yes that memory should work you just need to make sure that you buy it in pairs, so if you want to add 1 gb of ram then you need to get 2 sticks of 512mb and not a single 1gb stick or if you like get two 1gb sticks. Otherwise if you add only one stick your computer won't run in dual channel any more and your performance will drop a lot. Your computer should have two 512mb sticks now and just add the two new 512mb sticks to the open slots. Non ecc is what you want anyway so you should be good there.

Totally agree with jmwills www.crucial.com (or www.crucial.com/uk if like me you're in the uk) is definitely the best site to check for memory. The tools on there guarantee the memory you buy will work with your system, and you can always then search on other sites to see if you can find it cheaper.

You do realise that you can run Vista with 1GB or less of memory though? Granted it will be a lot easier to use with more but it would work ok without the memory upgrade. I was running the beta version on a 5 year old laptop with 512MB of memory and a 64MB graphics card!! Very slow but still gave me a good chance to try the new features of Vista without screwing up one of my main PC's.

Thanks for all the response. I was led to believe by friends that  should know that 1 gig was enough memory for any thing that I would want to do. Dell recommended 2 gig but I was cutting corners so I went with 1 gig. If I can add 1 gig for around $100 and have a faster computer I think I will go that route. Thanks Again,  Chub   (Computer illiterate but willing and able to learn).
