Adobe Reader 6 won't work

I have a Dimension 4600 with Windows XP and SP2.  I recently tried to download a form from a site that requires Adobe Reader and got the message  "Adobe Reader 6.0 has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry..."  After rebooting the computer, trying to download the form several times, and getting the same results each time I uninstalled Adobe Reader 5 and then downloaded Adobe Reader 6.0.1 from the Adobe free download site.  I'm still getting the same message every time I try to open a .pdf file.

I thought I might be having some sort of trouble getting stuff off of the internet, but I get the same results when disconnected from the internet and just trying to open any .pdf file already on my hard-drive.

Anybody had a similiar problem and/or know how to fix it?

    Hi:

There is an updated version 6.0.2. Might want to try that and see if it helps.

    http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/alternate.html

It is the download page. Scroll down until you see update version 6.0.2 Windows update only. It is about 4MB. Hope it solves your problem.

Thanks for your tip.  I downloaded the 6.0.2 dupdate and ran one of my .pdf files.  UGH!!!  I still had the problem.  I went back to your input and looked at the list of downloads available.  I downloaded the English full version of 6.0.2 for windows and, viola, my problem is now solved.  I can now open .pdf files both from the internet and my hard-drive.  Thanks very much for your help

    Hi

Came across this piece of information by Neil J. Rubenking who writes for PC Magazine.

“Our readers frequently ask why Adobe Reader 6.0 is so slow to load when they open a PDF file.  The main reason is that the Reader doesn’t load alone – it comes with a crowd of plug-ins.  If you watch the splash screen carefully you can see their names flip past.  Most people need only a handful of this plug-ins.  If you’d like to load PDC file faster, follow these simple instructions.

    Launch Windows Explorer

Navigate to the Program Files folder, usually C:\Program Files

Below this, navigate to Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Reader (psst, it’s 6.0.2 in  your case)

In the right-hand pane, find the folder named plug_ins

Right-click it and choose Rename, changing it to plug_ins_NOT

Create a new folder named plug_ins

From the plug_ins_NOT, copy just three (3) files to the new plug-ins folder:

    EWH32.api, printme.api, and search.api

That’s all you need do.  The next time you load a PDF file, only those three plug-ins will come along, and you should notice a significant speed improvement.  If you need to read encrypted PDFs or if for any other reason you want to undo this change, simple close Adobe Reader, delete the plug_ins folder and rename plug_ins_NOT to plug-ins”.

I found a more elegant solution to speeding up Acrobat in a post at the MozillaZine forums. It's a small program that does the following (from the README that accompanies the program):

ARSU stores unused plugins in the Optional folder of Acrobat/Reader. This means that when a PDF is viewed and Acrobat/Reader requires a plugin for full functionality, it'll be loaded for that particular PDF only.

The ZIP file containing the program can be downloaded from the author's Web site. The contents of the ZIP file should be extracted into a new directory, not the one that Acrobat's installed in.

Why Adobe doesn't package plugins this way, given that the "optional" plugins folder feature is theirs, I don't know!

Thanks for the link to the program, Jim. I just downloaded 6.0.1, out of curiosity. It is somewhat different than 5.0, but not by that much. I like it, though.

I also removed the third-party plug in "printme.api" file, deleted the registry keys that refered to "PrintMe", and deleted "PrintMe" from the Start\Programs menu. I haven't a need for internet printing, and I haven't detected any adverse effects.

The only two files left in my acrobat\plug_ins directory after running AdobeSpeedUp were EWH32.api and reflow.api. That was for full Acrobat 5.0. I hadn't installed any third-party addins.

PrintMe is included with Adobe Reader version 6 without any notification and without any user option to prevent it's installation or remove it. I discovered PrintMe in my Start\Programs after installing Acrobat Reader 6.
