Audio (Sigmatel) on Vista Ultimate

I had a working audio on my vista ultimate installed on Inspiron 9400. Last weekend, I plugged in my headphones and mic to use skype. Since them, the audio is stuck in the headphones and my pc speakers don't work. I have tried uninstalling the sound card, deleting drivers, using xp drivers and pretty much everything I can think off but the sound only in the headphones. Can someone please help me restore my pc speaker functionality? I am running the latest version of drivers from dell support downloads and the headphones and mic work properly.

Please refer to this for the Sigmatel issues:

IDT PC Audio Informational Site for Microsoft Vista

IDT acquired the SigmaTel PC Audio products and all support for SigmaTel PC Audio is now handled by IDT.

    Known Issue

    • Audio Driver stops working after upgrade to Vista (from XP to Vista, or from a base version of Vista to a more advanced version of the OS)
      • AUDIO ISSUE OVERVIEW Microsoft Vista supports upgrading an existing Windows system. During this upgrade process, previously installed audio device drivers are copied and reinstalled on the new Vista installation. This can involve upgrading from an earlier version of Windows (like XP), or from another version of Vista (e.g. Vista Home to Vista Ultimate).

During this process, a problem occurs where some of the files required for the IDT audio driver installation become inaccessible.

      • RESOLUTION This problem can be fixed by installing an updated audio driver, or by reinstalling the existing driver.

However, before doing this, the currently installed driver must be uninstalled. This process is explained below.

    ADDITIONAL VISTA SUPPORT

Please be sure to visit the web-based support pages published by your computer system vendor for additional information and any available driver updates. IDT's OEM partners (your computer system vendor) provide IDT with detailed feature-set and behavioral specifications for every model. IDT must comply with our customer's specifications for their systems. We are NOT allowed to distribute OEM drivers to end-users, nor can we make modifications to the drivers outside of these manufacturer's specifications.

No Luck. Have tried pretty much all I can think of. Also, this was a clean install and not an upgrade. My Audio was working perfectly find till last week. Help?

I know this sounds silly but have you tried changing the audio settings from headset to speakers and visa-versa? I only ask because it is a simple thing that could have been overlooked and I see no mention of what sound card and if you have tried changing any of it's settings yet. This may be something simple that is being thought of as something to do with Vista. Looking forward to a reply.

Hey Nightend, I have tried every possible settings. Currently my audio device is shown as "SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC" and in playback devices, it shows Speakers / Headphones. Under custom tab, it gives me an option of "PC Spk Mute" but this option is unchecked. Have had no luck whatsoever. When I did a clean install of vista, the sound was working fine, no problems. I put my headphones/microphone last sunday to talk using skype and it has been like this since then. Hope you can help me. Regards

it could also be a bad motherboard... but if your system did not ship with the version of windows Vista, then Dell support will most likely tell you to reinstall the OS that shipped with the system and then test.

Sounds like the jack may not know it's disconnected. I'd kind of "fiddle" with it, and yeah, you could always try putting XP back on there as a last resort to see if it's a driver issue.

How can I fiddle with it. I have tried all sorts of drivers with no avail. I am pretty confident that if I put xp or vista again - the sound will work from a clean install.

But the question is - is this going to happen again if I reinstall. If it is a driver problem, then it should work in the current installation. Has anyone has this problem?

It was the problem with the speakers DELL replaced all speakers and subwoofer and everything is fine now.

Note to self: Always call dell and ask them to trouble shoot, their hardware is very cheap quality and not worth the money we spend on them.
