Can I boot/run WinXP from an external hard drive?

I have both USB2 and Firewire400 external harddrives (enclosure). If I enclose a WinXP bootable HD inside one of these enclosures, will I be able to boot from it? How?

    Check in the BIOS of your system and see if the system supports booting to USB devices. If it does then you should be able to boot to an external hard drive. This drive can not be configured on another system it must be configured on the system that you will be using it to boot on. This is a limitation of the software that can not be overcome at this time.

    I thought that only MACs can boot from an external drive and WinXP PC's can't. I checked the BIOS but only the IDE CDROM, Floppy, and HD are listed as boot devices.

    Some Dell systems can do it too. In some cases you just have to try it to see if it works. but it is mostly much newer systems. The 8200 I belive is supposed to be able to do this by default.
