Cannot start Windows XP in safe mode
Hi,
When I was going to upgrade my video card I uninstalled the old drivers through Add/Remove programs and then I tried to restart into safe mode to run the program "driver cleaner". But every time I tried to restart into safe mode I got a blue screen with a Stop Error, some address and the text "Irql_Not_Less_or_Equal". Luckily it was possible to start Windows XP in normal mode and run driver cleaner from there (it is however strongly recommended to run it in safe mode).
Anyone who have an idea what can be the cause of this trouble? How can it be possible to start the computer in normal mode but not in safe mode?
EDIT: I had before moved my PCI cards around but had restarted several times in normal mode before I restarted into safe mode and the error occured.

OSPREY4, I encountered that your advise is extremely dangerous!. I had the same problem with my computer, cannot start Windows XP in SAFE mode. I followed your advise by marking START UP IN SAFE MODE in the BOOT.INI via MSCONFIG. This appeared not to be the solution. I still get the original STOP adress message as described above.
BUT: NOW I CANNOT GET INTO MY COMPUTER AGAIN, because it will always try to startup in SAFE mode, where it always hangs in blue screen.
Please help me to get BOOT.INI changed such that I can start in normal Windows mode as before.
When I use Windows install CD, I cannot reach harddrive, because I have SATA drive, and the drivers are not loaded!
Help please:
Dimension 8400, P43.2MHz, 1GB, ATI Radeon X800SE, Windows XP Pro SP2

2: Because I changed BOOT.INI with checked SAFE MODE startup, I cannot startup normal Windows mode anymore, so I cannot fix the first problem. You understand this double problem ?

Please explain your last advise about undo safe mode boot option. I told I cannot get in the Windows XP SAFE Mode and cannot get into the Windows Normal mode. How to uncheck the option then ??.
THIS IS BASICALLY MY MAIN PROBLEM. How can I get SAFE mode boot option undone, while I cannot enter windows.
After solving this problem I can work on the problem : Windows does not start in SAFE mode.

- Check this site for some ideas:I would not suspect this is a RAM or CPU problem, unless you have upgraded either of these from the OEM parts. If that site does not help, Google your error message and look around.To un-do the safe mode boot option, go back into MSCONFIG and uncheck it.

I am a bit disappointed that you still do not understand my problem: I cannot get access to my computer. So what is the use of advices where you have to try and change things in the computer.
I found my own solution now for my main, first priority problem:
With Dell resource CD I copied S-ATA HD Drivers to floppy disc.
With Dell Windows install CD, with F6 option and choosing S after that I loaded the HD drivers. After choosing Windows Repair mode , I could make in DOS prompt mode a copy of C:\BOOT.INI to a floppy, edit it on another computer (deleted STARTUP SAFEMODE option from it), copied it back to my computer.
Now I can startup my computer again in Normal Windows mode. Not in SAFE MODE yet, but I will try to find solution via GOOGLE search.
