Can't complete system restore

Greetings,
I have an 9 month old Dell Dimension with lots of bells and whistles.
Yesterday, my son alerted me that he had mistakenly clicked on a message in AOL IM that he thought was a virus.
I thought that one way to fix this would be a system restore and go back a day or so and that would eliminate this issue.
I clicked on windows system restore, get the monthly calendar on the left and the daily calendar on the right. According to the instructions I can go back in time to any of the bolded dates on the calendar.
I have been unsuccesful, the system restore is not allowing me to change the date to an older date.
What am I doing incorrectly?
Any advice?
Thank you in advance,
Hermansherman

    Augie,

    Thanks for the response,

On the monthly calendar on the left there are at least 14 dates that are bold. If I click any of these bolded dates, nothing happens

On the daily calendar on the right there is the starting point date. When I click the left arrow to move to an earlier time, nothing happens.

Also tried this in Safe mode and same non-response.

    Any other ideas? herman

When you select a date on the left, are you given a time and name of a restore point on the right? If you are not, there is no restore point for this date. The calendar on the left will have dates that are in very bold numbers, if not, there is no restore point for that date. If you don't have any dates in bold, you might need to check that system restore is not disabled. Right click My Computer, properties, System Restore tab, make sure that "turn off system restore on all drives" is not checked. Keep in mind that you system has to be idle with no activity for it to create a restore point automatically. You can create one your self anytime you want by selecting "create restore point" and name it whatever you want. Hope this helps you.

    Denny,

    Thank you for the response.

So, if I understand correctly, I cannot go back in time, all I can do is correct so that going forward I should be ok.

    Can you please confirm?
    Thank you,

    Herman

    hermansherman,

The symptom you describe can be caused by a corrupted restore database. The only fix for it is to turn of System Restore, reboot, then enable System Restore again. This will eliminated all existing (non-functional) restore points on the system. After you do this, create a manual restore point and see if you can restore to it. If so, the problem has been corrected.

    hermansherman,

That is correct. If you believe there is a virus on your system, a full system scan with your antivirus program will either confirm or deny that fact. If there is a virus, it can be removed through methods other than System Restore.
