Can't reinstall XP

I am attempting to reinstall Win XP on a dim 8300. When it starts loading devices it gets about half way then the screen goes black.

I have reseated everything in the machine, and even tried with out the sound card installed. The only things hooked up are the mouse, keyboard and monitor.

The video card in it does not have an onboard fan. I don't know what kind it is. I tried some more memory, but had the same result. It gets to loading devices then goes black. I'll pull the video card agin and check out the capacitors. Any suggestions are welcome.

The capacitors might not give any indication - in which case, the easiest way to determine if yours is faulty, is to try and borrow another (known working) graphics card?

I wonder if you know the history of this machine... perhaps this video problem is the reason why it was passed on to you?!?

Is that mentioned in another forums thread somewhere, because there's no mention of it being a second-hand system in this one?

Did you disconnect all external peripherals except the monitor, keyboard and mouse, and be sure those are not USB, or wireless.  Any internal USB card should also be removed.

The machine belongs to my brother I told him I would thy to get it running then I'll give it back. The only things attached are the Monitor,Keybord and mouse. I even found my old ball mouse so it would not be pluged into a usb port. The OS disk is new I had my brother order it from dell. I have tried with the sound card and motem removed but I got the same result.

I would run the Dell Diagnostics .  that will help you spot any defective hardware
