I upgraded a dimension 1100 from xp pro to Vista Ultimate. Everything went smoothly except for the cdrom drive. The drive appeared in device manager with a code 39.
After quite awhile of wasted time I finally got the drive to appear in device manager without any errors and the cdrom visible in "Computer" using this MS KB:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/320553/
The problem is that as soon as i put a CD in, the computer locks up. Vista doesn't entirely crash but all systems like exporer and so on lock up and stop responding. The cd drive doesn't spin up and there are no light, but it won't eject.
The drive is a TS-H262C CD-RW.
I uninstalled all Roxio software after upgrading which is probably the cause of the trouble. I'm downloading it again to see if that helps...
Any ideas on fixing this problem, I'd really like to avoid a clean installation since there are a lot of programs that are a pain to reinstall.
I reinstalled the Roxio programs and now the cd drive does spin up and the green light stays on constantly now. But the computer still freezes.

Sounds more like a video driver than anything else and yes I would dump Roxio.
I have a PCI version of the ATI x1300 (by Diamond) 256mb installed for Aero. I'll try reactivating the integrated and removing the PCI to see if the helps.
I already tried that but under Primary Video Controllor the only options are Auto ore Onboard.
I've backed everything up and doing a clean install now...
Strange thing: I tried a repair using the cd and the drive worked the next time it booted up (with the windows install cd in the drive), but on the next restart it went back to the same old thing.
I formatted and did a fresh install of vista thinking that something must be wrong with the upgrade. Computer comes up, brand new-like and guess what. That's right the drive was doing the same thing.
So I switched the drive out with an older one from a system I bought several years ago and it works like a charm.
Now I just need to figure out why the the system is sluggish on a new install when it wasn't on the upgrade... Another dilema another day.
