deleting old compressed files

i recently tried to do disc cleanup and it kept freezing up. i looked around online and in dell help & support and found instructions on how to make a volume caches file and delete my old compressed files. i did exactly what the directions said to do and it worked just fine. i can now do a disc cleanup, but... none of the directions said what to do with the volume caches icon i now have on my desktop. does anyone know??? do i restore it and put the compressed files back in my registry?? or what??? in advance, your help and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

The steps you followed to fix your issue, created this backup of the VolumeCaches registry key. If you had experienced any problems after you completed those steps, then you could have used this backup to restore the VolumeCaches key to its original state.
But this would put you back to square 1, the hanging/freezing of Disk Cleanup with Compressed Files.
You can cut and paste that VolumeCaches.reg file and put it away in your documents folder for safe keeping and see how things go . If you ever need to restore the key, double-click the VolumeCaches.reg file on your desktop, and then click Yes.

pamela, thanks so much for the info. does my computer automatically create another compressed old files file on its own? or is it just gone forever since i deleted it?

i knew there was a problem with "compressing old files" in "disk cleanup" so i just never checked that box when running "disk cleanup".. one way or another, the "old files" were taken care of without my ever doing anything with them in "disk cleanup"..

    danielsma,

You would have to double click the volumecache.reg file to import it back into the registry. It should not show that key in the registry now (you can always look to verify this).
