Dimension 4400 Stop Error

My friend has a Dimension 4400. The hard drive was recently reformatted and everything has been fine. However, after connecting to the Internet for the first time yesterday, a blue screen with a stop error appeared. Following is the technical information from that error message:

***STOP: 0x00000050 (0xFFFF0000, 0x00000000, 0x8051256B, 0x00000000)

I haven't been able to find any resources about this particular error anywhere else. The computer is running Windows XP SP1 and is unable to stay connected to the Internet without the stop error long enough to update Windows, much less do anything else. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello Holt08 :smileyhappy:

I think you may have some kind of infection there especially if you connected to the internet without a firewall enabled.  Have a look at this article

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;894278

If the above applies to you, one or more of the following will be on your system, so run a search for them

    Msupd5.exe
    Msupd4.exe
    Msupd.exe
    Reloadmedude.exe

If it is not that it could be a different type of malware.  You can`t run online scans, so install "Ewido" on the machine.  The program is not free, but you get a fully functioning version for a free 2 week trial.  Thereafter you have to pay for it to keep all functionality.  If you do not pay for it you just lose the background protection amd still have the scanning .

    Ewido http://www.ewido.net/en/

Download it with your machine and remember to update it bsfore running.

I will try what you suggested. However, I doubt that it is due to malware because we were using AVG and ZoneAlarm when the computer was connected to the Internet. The last time the error message appeared, it was directly after ZoneAlarm prompted me to allow or block access to a PeoplePC component.

Will reply again after the steps are taken as detailed in the Miscrosoft Knowledge Base article.
