A couple of weeks ago the machine would try to boot up when the power button was pushed but didn't quite do it. When the button was held in longer it would boot up. Since then the time required to hold in the power button got longer and longer, up to a minute and a half. Now it will not power up at all.
I talked with a Dell technician last night and he walked me through taking the computer apart. With each part we removed we tested booting up but after removing the video card, the audio card, two memory cards, unplugging the cd and dvd drives and the hard drive he was concluding that the mother board is bad. We tried to remove a processor; we took out a box shaped seried of metal plates and below that was a flat piece of plastic. The plastic would move horizontally when the release lever was lifted but I couldn't actually lift that piece of plastic out. So that was the last thing to test but we didn't get it tested. So at this point the guess is the mother board is the culprit. Dell tells me they can ship a replacement for $140 but then I have to get it in. After last night I almost think I could put it in myself but I'm not sure; I don't know what it would cost for a service technician to do it. This is frustrating because the computer is only 13 months old.
I had a similar experience with a Dimension 8400. It crashed and then would not boot up again. The service from DELL was absolutely the worst I've seen. It ended up taking 9 weeks for them to replace the system.
All (this community, Dell technicians, and a local repair shop) agree that this is the motherboard. This Dell 4600 is 13 months old without an extended warranty so I am letting the local repair shop fix it but they have to use a new case, a fan, and maybe a power supply because their motherboard won't fit in the Dell case. I probably should have gotten the computer custom made from them in the first place though I don't know what they would have charged for it.
i bought my 4600 last november and i had the same thing happen to me on x-mas morning 13 months later too. i turned the comp off the night before on x-mas eve and the next morning it wouldn't turn on. no lights, no beeps, no nothing. so i called support and was walked through the troubleshooting and then was told the motherboard, cpu, or power supply was shot. They said it was still under warranty and i would hear from someone the next tuesday or wednsday (4-5 days later). so i sat near phone waiting. NO PHONE CALL OR E-MAIL WAS RECEIVED. 2 days after they should have called, i called them again and got the same routine and was told i'd hear from someone again in a few days. NO PHONE CALL OR E-MAIL WAS RECEIVED. after a week i call again, again same routine, only this time i was told they weren't sure where or when the parts were shipped or who would be doing the work. i was told in a very definate way that i would be sent an e-mail or get a phone call telling me exactly the status of my service call and the parts. well... it's been 3 days and guess what....NO PHONE CALL OR E-MAIL WAS RECEIVED.
well, thanks dell; you made my x-mas wonderful ( woulda been nice to try out the new wireless keyboard, mouse, etc) and with my last term of classes at college starting in a few days, it's really going to benefit me and aid my studies to be without my computer.

1 Do you have any light on the power button on the tower?
2 Do you have any light on the LED(4 lights) on the back of the tower?
3. Do you have any light on the Monitor?
