Disk Cleanup versus System Idle Process Conflict

Hello,

Wondering if anyone has experienced a CPU conflict between Disk Cleanup and System Idle Process?  May be a two part problem somehow related, but it's taking up up 95-99% of my CPU and thus making everything else run extremely slowly.  When I try to run Disk Cleanup, the program begins to "Compress Old Files" but then never finishes.  This take 90%+ of my CPU according to Task Manager.  Yet when I End Process on Disk Cleanup b/c it never finishes, then a new process called "System Idle Process" appears, taking the 90%+ formerly used by Disk Cleanup, and my system is very slow.  Under Task Manager, there is no option to End Process on System Idle Process, which only uses 20K memory but has a Base Priority of "N/A".  Restarting does not help.  The System Idle Process will run immediately...and only disappears when I attempt to run Disk Cleanup...but then reappears when I have to End Process on Disk Cleanup.  An annoying cycle that is making my XP run pathetically slow.  Any ideas?  Many thanks.

823302 - The Disk Cleanup Tool Stops Responding
    or
This Regedit from kellys-korner should fix the problem:

    Disk Cleanup freezes
Disk Cleanup - Compressed Old Files Freezes (Line 48)

If that regedit didn't fix it...
    Restore Disk Cleanup
Restore Disk Cleanup - cleanmgr (Line 84)

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting E

Many thanks, the regedits worked indeed!!   "System Idle Processes" still shows as running 90%+ of my CPU but only burns 20k mem.

As I understand it, System Idle Process just show what % of the CPU isn't being used.
It is normal for it to show 90%+ if your system isn't doing much.

Many thanks...feel silly now that I asked that question as it makes too much sense!
