Hibernation is a function of the operating system that is currently running. You have to shutdown to restart in the other OS. Each OS doesn't know the other exists.

That's what I mean. 

Is there any way to edit the bootloader not to force you to have to do this though?

I'm not sure about the Vista bootloader, but third party bootloader will allow this by default such as "System Commander "

Thanks, I might have to check out that. ;)

I will be triple booting XP, Vista and Ubuntu soon enough on the laptop so I might just use Grub at the end of the day. AFAIK it allows this.
