google toolbar

I have an Inspiron laptop with MS XP operating system.  I have a problem after the computer boots.  My desktoop screen is displayed -- then I get an error message "this page cannot be displaed ----" that is identified with google toolbar.  This message cannot be removed from the screen unless I use cntl/alt/del and end the task.  My computer than functions normally until I restart the computer and the same senario is experienced again.  I have tried to uninstall google, but that hasn't solved the problem.  I also entered regedit and deleted all reference to google that I could find -- no difference.  I also deleted all folders that had google files in them so I am at a loss for finding a solution.  Please help.  Thanks -- Neal (this is my first lapton and my first Dell unit)

Just throwing this out here - wondering if at some point your desktop was set to display a web page.

Have you looked in your display settings under Desktop -> Customize Desktop and disabled/removed everything under the Web tab?

Are you having trouble connecting to the internet?

Are you just having trouble viewing website pages? If so, what browser are you using. Did you try a different browser?

Are you having this problem while connecting using wireless? Your system or hotspot?

Are you using any type of peer to peer programs, like Limewire, Bearshare, etc?

What is the exact error mesage you're getting. And this happens only on bootup or after you go online?

"My current home page" is exhibited and I don't have the option to disable anything under the Web tab (disable is gray).

The gray is normal -home page can't be deleted.   It's only active if you add another page.

If it's only occurring at boot, and after that everything is normal, then that would imply some program running at startup trying to either use the google toolbar, install it, or update it.   The full text of the error and the name of the task you're disabling might help someone here figure it out.

    1) Go to Start -> Run -> msconfig -> Startup tab, look for anything Google.

    2) Under Services tab, check the box at the bottom that says "hide all Microsoft services", then look for anything Google in there (I have a Google updater, though it's disabled).

    3) IE -> Tools -> Manage Add-ons, make sure all the Google Toolbar objects are gone

    4) If you haven't tried it yet, System Restore can be your friend (Start -> Help -> Return my PC to an earlier date).

No trouble connecting to the internet or viewing website pages.  I'm using Internet Explorer 6.

    No peer to peer programs.

Error messsage -- "This page cannot be displayed.  The page you are loooking for is currently unavailable.  Tlhe website might be experiencing technical difficulties, or youo may need to adjust your browser settings.  Please try the following --- cannot find server or DNS Error  Internet Explorer".

I have seen this message while logged in to the web site on my desktop and a web site was unavailabe.  I am not logged on to the website when I get the message on my laptop.

Thanks, I will check the Dell backup discs to see if there is a solution other than reinstalling my operating system.

Cool - at least that narrows it down.   Probably already know this, but be careful if you've disabled the real-time antivirus too.

msconfig -> startup etc worked.  I am using "selective startup" -- "load startup items" is now unchecked.  "gusvc" is unchecked in the services section (disabled) -- all others enabled

Thanks.  I am still going to try to find where the google command is, however.
