Hard drive not found - Windows root system32 corrupted

My Dell Dimension 4600 quit working and told me my hard drive can't be found.  It gave me the message that Windows root system32\ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupted and that I should reinstall a copy of the file.  I'm 1 month out of warranty!

I can't boot my computer.  What do I do to correct this problem?  I'm running Windows XP Home edition.  I don't know which disk that came with the computer might have the needed file or how to go about installing it.

Any help will be appreciated!
Thanks!
Belle

    shipsbelle,

See if this helps. Boot to the recovery console (see this) with the Windows XP reinstallation CD in the drive. At the command prompt enter the following, substituting the letter of your CD-ROM drive for X:
    expand X:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32

and press . Note that there is a space before the c:. You should see a message that the file has been expanded. Reboot.

    Hi,

Have you tried running the Hard drive diagnostics .. Press Ctrl+Alt+D as soon as you see the Dell Logo .. if the diagnostics show that Primary IDE drive 0 as pass then you can try this else buy a new Hard drive.

I cannot get as far as the Dell Logo.  I get the dark screen that tells me I have a corrupt or missing file.  I did the Resource CD diagnostics that showed 2 errors on the IDE read and verify test.  One was  "uncorrectable data error, or media is write protected"  (code 0F00:0244 block 17576568 if that means anything to any of you knowledgable folks) and the other was "address mark not found" (code 00F00:0240 block 17578231).

This morning I'm going to try the repair from the reinstall disk to see if that fixes it.  In the meantime, I have to use the "old" computer!  I don't want to lose everything I have on the newer one!!

Thanks to the responders who have offered suggestions. :smileyhappy:

Those errors suggest that there is no media in the CD-ROm .. that's nothing to do with your HDD .. so what i suggest you is .. try to copy the NTOSKRNL.EXE file from the i386 folder .. how to do is mentioned in the KB article of Microsoft.

    I'll tell you in short.

Start the computer and tapp the F12 after you see the first light glowing on your keyboard ..

    you'll c a boot device menu,

Insert the Windows XP Disk in the Top CD Drive .. select the option that say Boot from CD-ROm or IDE-CDROM from the boot device menu on your screen and hit enter.

Hit enter if you c "press anykey to boot from cd"

when you c the screen Press "R" to repair using recovery console .. press "R"

type "1" and hit enter, then hit enter on Administrator password or type it if you have any.

Now you are on the c:\windows

    now type here:

    expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

    and hit enter.

Now type exit and hit enter .. your system will restart.

Let me know if it works.

    Lugman and Denny,

Tried your suggestions but the file couodn't be created.  Now I'm doing a repair reinstallation of  Windows XP. At least I can see something on the screen again instead of the blank screen with the dreaded message of corruption!!  It has 35 more minutes to go before install is complete--I'll let you know if all is well.

OK guys, what now?  I did the repair reinstall of the Windows XP and it worked fine while I was using it.  But about 20 minutes after it was idle I got that dreaded blue screen message "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.  Kernel_Stack_Inpage_Error  Dumping physical memory to disk"

When I try to reboot, the page with the options of F2 and F12 opens and I click on F12 to boot.  No matter what drive I try to boot with I get the same page response that Windows did not open successfully and to try the last known good boot, which they show as the "Normal" one.  Then it proceeds to try to boot and all I get is a white ribbon across the bottom of the message screen.  I tried to reinstall the repair Windows XP, but it won't open Windows after going thru the 30 minutes of set up!  Takes me back to the Dell page with the F2 and F12 options which don't work.

    Any advice?

    Thanks!

    Lugman,

Can you point me to a place where I can get more detailed info on a paralell reinstall?  I'm not a computer wizard, but I can follow directions pretty well!  What is a paralell reinstall?  I haven't had any problems with my computers until now, so all this tech talk is new to me.

    Thanks!

    Hi,

My name is Luqman .. not Luqman. :smileyhappy:

Let me tell you briefly about parallel reinstall.

Start the computer and tap F12 to enter Boot device menu. (or you can change the boot sequence to CD from BIOS)

Insert XP disk in Top CD Drive .. highligt IDE CDROm hit enter, hit enter on Press Any Key to Boot.

Hit Enter to install Windows, F8 on licese agreement

If you get a screen that says to repair windows press R then press Esc .. Else

Highlight the C: Partition and hit enter .. now press C to continue

Now Highlight Leave Current file system Intact and hit enter .. then pres Esc.

now in the box instead \Windows ... type \WinXP .. and hit Enter .. follow onscreen instructions.

at the time of Creating user accounts just create one user account with the name User1 .. and search for your data on c:\ drive and save it ... ok

    With Warm Regards,
    Luqman.
