History Box is Empty

The web sites I have visited are no longer showing in the drop down box from the Address box.  I ran Disk Cleanup a few days ago and that cleaned the history out.  However, I thought a new history would build as I typed in web sites.  It is cleaned out every time I log on.  There are no websites remaining from my previous session.  What is causing this?

    carlh,

Open the registry editor (Start|Run, enter regedit and click OK) and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs and see what is shown in the right pane. If the TypedURLs key is missing you will have to create a new one. That is the location where the entries in the drop down box under the Address block are stored.

Denny, I do have the Typed URLS key, but the only thing in the right pane is  (Default.  value not set.)  It has an ab in front of Default. Now, what do I do?

    carlh,

If the key is there (and the display in the right pane is what should be there) I don't know why it isn't logging the URLs you are entering in the Address bar, nor does a Google search turn up anything worthwhile, only links to "privacy" software which can prevent their being recorded.

Denny, I donn't know if what is showing in the right pane is correct.  It doesn't sound like it's correct  Can you tell me what should be there?

    carlh,

What you describe is what I would expect to be there if no data have been added to the key: the "ab" icon labeled (Default), REG_SZ, and (value not set).

    carlh,

Do you have a value established in the "Days to keep pages in History" in Tools|InternetOptions|General?

It sounds as if you have set your days to 0.

Another possibility would be if your string values in Typed URLs are not in sequence: e.g. url2, url3, url4...; however you have already stated that no URLs are listed in Typed URLs, so sequencing does not seem to be the problem. You could try creating a few new string values (in the registry) just for fun, rebooting, and then seeing if they appear in the Location bar. But if you have never done anything like that, you need careful instruction first, and...

As always, before proceeding into your registry, export a copy to your desktop.

    xley,

I have my days set to 20.

I have never created any string values an wouldn't know where to start.

    carlh,

That may be the source of the problem. Open the registry editor, navigate to TypedURLs, right-click it and select Delete. Close regedit. A new TypedURLs key will be created (with the correct type). Type a URL in the Address bar of IE then see if it is stored in the new TypedURLs key.

Denny, I did as you suggested.  The registry right pane has the same info, no REG_SG, and typing new URL's in the address bar doesn't stay in the history after rebooting.

I also have Netscape Communicator and Netscape 7.2 and I have URL's in the drop down boxes of both.  I couldn't find anything in the Registry that showed Typed URL's for either one.  I don't know if this helps anything.  It sounds to me like something is wrong with my IE 6.0.
