How do I do a "screen shot"

or save a copy of an error message, for example, to post in a forum? Thanks in advance for any suggestions

You beat me to it :)

To copy the whole screen just hit the print screen button then open MS Paint and paste it. To print just the active window press and hold the alt key then press print screen and paste into MS Paint.

    melmcbee,

Press "print screen" button on keyboard. Open paint (start>>programs>>accessories). Press "ctrl & V" at the same time. Select "file" and "save as" a bitmap or jpeg using whatever name you wish. I prefer jpeg over bitmap due to the smaller file size. You can view and print the file with paint or other picture viewer, or email it as an attachment,,etc.

Thanks to both of you. I have never used the MS Paint program so I guess I will have to read up on it. Will this file end up in the "my pictures" folder? I guess I want to know how I find it if I am writing someone and want to attach it to my post. Thank you again.

I dont mean in an email but in a forum type enviroment.

    ke4wkp:

I tried your suggestion and came up with a split page, can you please tell me what I did wrong? I have been trying to do this same thing for some time now with no success. I have to say I'm not the most computer literate. I would like to capture the active window not the whole page. Any help you can offer will be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

    Donald000:
I searched around google and I couldn't find anything about your problem with the split screen. Sorry :) If I come across anything I will post it here.

    Melmcbee:
To find MS Paint Click Start-->All Programs-->Accessories-->Paint.

To save Click file-->Click Save as.... And you can choose where you want to save it.

Couldn't you also press print screen and then go to notepad, and paste it in this program and then save?

NO , you can paste it to Paint though as image is compatible.

    Edit:
Once picture is captured you can also view using "Run"  & type
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CLIPBRD.EXE
