IE 7 installation on my 5150 seemed to work ok until I tried to log off and shut down. The log off window displays on the desktop, but when I click on log off, nothing happens. The only way to shut down is to do a forced shut down with the power button. I tried with the task manager also with no response. Did a system restore and all was back to normal.
I tried it again after shutting down all security programs, using a copy of IE 7 downloaded from Microsoft, and the same thing happened. After another system restore, I am back to the original IE6 and all is well.
Thanks for the Link mombodog. I have never experienced so much work around just to install a Browser! I usually use Firefox and Opera except for Windows Update. What surprises me is the installation of IE7 on my old Emachines 6524 with xp media edition was flawless from the Windows Update site even with all security in place (zonealarm, Microsoft defender, antivirus, etc). ..but it causes my Dell 5150 to hang on log out/ shut down, even when I follow all the workarounds described on the Link you referenced.
Maybe it just another disappointing characteristic of this Inspiron 5150. It's the only computer I ever owned where the manufacturer recommended so many bios flash updates (which thankfully I never did). Guess I will just leave IE6 in place and use Firefox.
I agree that it probably has to do with your Dell in particular. I installed IE7 last week and have had absolutlely no problems with it. I'm not a big microsoft fan but I have no complaints about IE7.
I had to uninstall IE7, Windows XP Home SP2 with all current priority updates, did not function well on HP ze4230 Celeron. Sorry do not remember key issues but I did a recovery to IE6 24 hours after installing IE7. I will wait until the IE7 release is stable before I try again - best guess is 60-90 days.
Chasbox,
Appreciate the references, but I have tried all the work arounds and nothing helps. IE7 installs perfectly on my other computers but not on this dell 5150.
What bewilders me is...the millions of people out there with computers set for automatic update with all security features activated and not having problems installing IE7. I can't believe Microsoft is pushing a geek install via express update.
I'll find the root cause sooner or later, but right now it's a bit irritating. Will just stick with Opera on that machine.
