Inspiron Problems with digital camera + card reader

In the summer, my brother decided to take it upon himself to fix the problem I was having with my computer.  At the time, it wouldn't accept most USB sticks other than the hp one I have.  He claims he did nothing, but since that day, I've had two major problems:

1.  I usually put the camera memory stick into the side of the monitor using a Sony memory Stick Duo Adaptor.  Now, the computer doesn't even think it's there.

2.  When I try to hook the digital camera (Sony DSC-W35) to the tower via a USB cable, it recognizes that something is there, but it tells me that it can't install the software.

>> I've tried inserting the disk that came with the camera, but that didn't help.

>> I contacted the support desk for the camera.  They spent over an hour on my system and then told me it's not the camera - it's the computer.

Things that might be worth noting:

1.  There's no problem with the camera or the USB cord.  I can hook it up to my laptop and get the pictures off without any problems.

2.  I can still use the hp USB stick on my desktop without any problems.

Can anyone tell me how to fix both these issues?  It's driving me nuts especially since my laptop is on it's way out and then I'll really be stuck for getting images off the camera.

Thanks everyone!

    Hi DawnMartinello,

I suggest you to uninstall the USB Root Hubs from the Device Manager and restart the computer. This will refresh all the USB drivers and may fix the issue with the ports. Please follow the steps provided below to uninstall the devices:

    1. Please disconnect all USB devices to the ports.
    2. Click "Start", type “devmgmt.msc” (without quotation marks) in the “Search” bar and press "Enter". Click “Continue” if necessary.
    3. In “Device Manager”, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".
    4. Repeat the step 3 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".
    5. Restart the computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.

I hope this helps. Please reply to this message if you need further assistance.

    Oops!  I didn't reply TO your message so I'm re-posting again :)

Does it matter that I'm running Vista?  And to be clear, I would do this for every single line under USB controllers ... there's 6 that say host controller, 2 that say enhanced host controller, 1 printing hub, and 8 root hubs.

    Hi DawnMartinello,

Thank you for your reply. It doesn’t matter if it’s Windows Vista. You can go ahead and uninstall all the USB hubs and controllers and restart the computer. Please reply to this message with your findings.

Finally found on screen keyboard.  did as you said but now there's a ton of unknown devices under usb and cannot get keyboard to work.  tried unplugging it and plugging back in.  usb drivers and utility disk that came with PC - no go.  card reader still not recognized, usb to camera still not recognized, and more unknown/unfound devices than ever.  cant find driver on dell site - very frustrated.

another update - I've finally been able to get the keyboard working by reinstalling drivers over and over.  However, my original problems still exist.

I've finally been able to fix one of the two issues - USB from camera to computer now works.  The computer still does not recognize the Sony Memory Stick Duo Adaptor (MSAC-M2) that's inserted in the side of the monitor.

    Hi DawnMartinello,

Thank you for the updates and appreciate your efforts to fix the issue. I apologize for the delay in responding to your request.

I suggest you to connect the Sony Memory Stick Duo Adaptor (MSAC-M2) to the USB port on the tower and check if it is detected. Please reply to this message with the system model (E.g. Inspiron 530s)
