I would go for it after checking to make sure all other updates are in place and that you don't have any hardware/software on the blacklist.

 

Reason for my reply... I have a Logitech webcam and did the upgrade to SP1, I have no issues!!!

If you don't have a logitech webcam, I'd say go for it.  If it's being offered via windows update then you have no possibly conflicting drivers.  It's made my laptop run smoother and I think it's faster as well.

Locate any problem drivers that are on your system.  See if there are updates available (through dell for instance).  If there are then install them and SP1 should show up in windows update.

 

If you can't find a "good" driver then don't worry too much ...  you can still get SP1.  In fact, some people recommend using this full package instead of windows update:

The drivers listed in the microsoft article (with the exception of logitech) work fine with SP1 -- they just sometimes do not get reinstalled properly during the SP1 installation process.  If this happens (and it likely won't) you will simply need to reinstall the drivers in question (dell should offer all of them on their website). 

 

To make things easier, for any drivers listed in the microsoft article, it might be a good idea to download the driver files from dell before you do the SP1 update so that you can install them following hte update if they are required.

 

I don't mean to scare you with all this information -- chances are very good that it will be painless.  Still, as with any big update, make a full backup if you can.

I've encountered NO problems to date. Two obvious positives which I've noticed are:

1) increased speed when copying files across a network

2) Sleep and resume from sleep now works reliably and EVERY time.

Nice catch.  It looks like it's only a concern for logitech cams that use the Lvuvc.sys driver.  I haven't installed my qcpro4000 on vista, so I can't say for certain, but on XP mine doesn't use that driver.  Which cam do you have and is yours using that driver?

 

The KB article doesn't say it will always fail either -- but unlike the other listed drivers, this one can cause a BSOD during the middle of the installation (which I imagine to be bad).

I have not seen many problems reported at all  And I have it on 5 machines and all work better, unless I am just imaging that because I want VISTA to succeed.  who knows? 

 

I have seen good things so far from SP1.  Sleep seems to function better.  I have noticed that my shutdowns are faster.  Used to take 50 seconds from the time I'd click shutdown to the computer turning off.  Now it happens around 35 seconds.

 

My copying over my network is 25% or so faster. 

 

I like what I see so far.

 

Now mwfanelli3, you state that SP1 might fix your shutdown problems, but you are waiting to install it?  I would do it now and see if it truly helps.

Well, SP1 showed up in Automatic Update today. I intend to wait. There have been too many

problems reported. Couple that with the usual less-than-ideal Microsoft updates, I'm much too

suspicious to be a first adopter.

 

On a side note, when my laptop refused to shut down again (more than 50% of the time now) , something new happened: On the reboot, I got a screen telling me 

that the "unintended shutdown" problem could be fixed by installing SP1. Maybe it was

a Vista, rather than Dell, problem all along.

 

The logitech cam is not the only problem with SP1.I have a pinnacle HDTV PRO usb tv tuner and it has a problem with SP1 also.I tried downloading via windows update and it failed 4 times.

eskymi- I'm glad the SP! is working for you. I have heard of problems on other sites. Perhaps it is user error, perhaps its not. There have been some whacky XP service packs that took a while to settle down. True, I'm being overly cautious and a bit paranoid but this laptop is a machine I use every day. I'd rather not have a major meltown and/or a partial-then-die install. All my other computers are XP Pro.

 

As for the shutdown problem, I have gotten used to handling that with a brain death (pull out AC and yank

the battery) so its not critical at this point. Give me time and I'll come around!
