hello. i just have a quick question. when i purchased my latitude, i did not purchase the recovery cd as well. however, i do have a windows xp pro cd from my desktop. can i use that with the key that i got for my laptop to do a fresh install of the os?
i have a inspiron 700m and it had WIN XP Home on it, but i have a WIN XP Pro cd. So can i install that new OS on it? or do i have to do something else? Please help me out. Thanks!

In the future, by using the Advanced Forum Search on the bottom of this page, you can quite easily find the answer to this often asked question.
Provided you have an unused Pro key, and you download all drivers beginning with chipset and notebook system software, and you reinstall all software, you can install Pro on it.

what do you mean i have to have a dell desktop in order for me to use my windows xp cd.
He means that since you said your desktop came with Pro, and you want to use that CD for your notebook, that you can IF the notebook came with Pro. If the notebook came with Home, then you cannot do this, it's illegal, violates the license agreement, and also violates the terms of service of this forum to discuss it.
however, if I have a another product key for XP PRO then i can install on my laptop rite? even if I had it as HOME on it before. I know i cannot use the key i have for my desktop to use on my laptop but if i have a brand new XP PRO then i can format my laptop and run it smoothly rite?

You're getting confused by posting in the middle of someone else's thread...
I already answer your question pretty clearly - you can use a RETAIL copy of XP PRO if you have a unused key, and then install all your drivers starting with chipset and notebook system software.
