Internet Explorer

In the past 4 days, my browser has started being unable to display various pages. It says "Page Cannot Be Displayed." The pages are pages that I frequent. One page in particular is a very simple html page with no extra anything, just a very simple and plain html page. There are way too many pages giving me problems for me to believe that all the servers are having individual problems. I'm sure I must have made some change to the computer, but I don't remember any downloads, installs or uninstalls in that time period.

I'm running IE 5.5 SR 1 and have been for quite some time. I've tried using Norton SystemWorks 2001 WinDoctor to find and fix errors. I tried reinstalling from the IE setup file stored on my computer. I tried downloading a new setup file and reinstalling all componets. I tried using the add/remove programs to repair. All attempts have left me stranded with the same problem.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Mike, for starters, have you tried using WinMe System Restore to take you back to a set point prior to the past four days and see if this resolves the problem?

Some other questions I have, are you able to display some pages, but not all? How do you access the Internet - modem, cable? Have you made any hardware changes like adding a NIC? Have you added any security software that might be filtering the pages and preventing them from displaying?Post back with more information and we might be able to help you resolve this.

    Hi,
Try Deleting your Temp Internet files & History files by opening IE Tools > Internet Options. If this doesn't help, check your security settings located in the same location as above to see if you have it set too high--default is medium. Other than that, with all that you have already done the only other thing to try is reinstalling/updating your MS java and Windows Scripting Engine. Post back if you need help doing this.

I had never before used the system restore. So, of course, after being reminded that it was an option, I anxiously tried a restore point to before the problem occurred. No changes.

I use a cable modem for Internet access. As far as hardware changes, there haven’t been many. A couple of months ago, I added 128 MB RAM. Before that, I haven’t made a hardware change in over 6 months. I don’t use any security software.

I delete all forms of temp files and temp data off my computer several times a day. No good reason, I just like to keep it cleaned up.

I hadn’t considered security. I checked my security setting and found it set to custom, however, my problem did not go away after resetting security to medium.

    HI,
Have you gone into your Temp Internet Folder and deleted all of the cookies? A corrupeted cookie can cause your type of problem. I too have noticed quite a few web pages inactive lately, but not those that I frequent.

I know this might sound scary but go to add/remove software in your control panel and scroll down to microsoft internet net explorer. click on it and you get a box with three choices. the one in the middle is repair internet explorer. check this box and and then click the add/remove box at the bottom. another box will pop up and it will ask you are you sure, click yes and one more box will pop up, click yes and when it's done click on restart and everything should be ok. when you're pc restarts and you start I.E. it will take you to MSN the first time but click on home and you'll go to you're regular home page.

Yeah, I've been there on the System Restore. I've seen it work and I've seen it not work, but it is good that you tried it just to remove one more variable.

Mike, you didn't mention whether or not this is occuring on all pages or just a few. If it is always occuring then I have a procedure you could try, but if you do display some internet pages then the procedure probably does not apply and I would suspect your cable company. I have @Home cable and there were a couple of days when I had a real hard time displaying pages on a regular basis. The connection on their end kept disconnecting and reconnecting and I could tell it was them because the downstream carrier LED on the modem was sometimes off or flashing. Could this be it?

    Hi there,

I too have recently began eperiencing this problem with my Inspiron 3800. AOL 6.0 had been working fine and suddenly I have been unable to display any pages at all on the web.

I don't know whether you are aware of this but if you are using Win Me- there is an update for your modem which is supposed to fix this problem. If you are using AOL it is under keyword:webutil.

Unfortunately this did not help my problem. But perhaps it my help.
