Lost CD Key - PLEASE HELP!!

Ok. Here's my situation. I got this laptop a while got with xp, got the free vista upgrade, set up my laptop to dual boot the xp and vista. Recently I decided to switch back to XP and completely remove Vista, so I did. But I was having problems with it. I figured I'd give Vista another shot after formating the drive and starting new. So, I did that. Here's the thing though. I know clean installs are better than upgrades, so that's what I did, using this method: http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/winvista_upgrade_clean.asp which is installing the upgrade without the cd key to put it in as a 30 day trail, then upgrading from that. The only thing is, It seems I can't find my the cd key that came with the upgrade. But, before removing Vista, I backed up the whole partition that it was on. I've looked around online and found that apparently neither Dell nor Microsoft will help much since it's an OEM product. But, I'm wondering if there is any way that I can somehow get the CD key out of all my backed up files. If anyone could help that would be amazing. Thanks.

If the Vista upgrade was from Dell, you should have received a COA for Vista that would have superceded the XP COA.

As Rebel9 has stated there is a COA either on the envelope, or it came w/ the disk so you could affix it to your system.

No - it means that the Product Key was on the envelope that the Vista Disk was in when you received it.

I have that envelope here, but it does not have the product key anywhere on it.

When you received your Vista upgrade disk from Dell, there should have been a new COA (Certificate of Authenticity) which is a sticker that has the product key on it. Your old XP sticker is either on the top or back of your system, and no the XP key will not activate Vista.

What does that mean? That I can just use my XP key to activate it?

    GamerGuy1,

Just how did you do a backup of your Vista partition?  Did you simply copy it to another drive?  Did you use Ghost to make an image? Did you use Ntbackup?  If the Windows directory is included in your backup, then the OEM key is there and can be retrieved.

    GamerGuy1,

OK.  Plug in the external drive to which you copied the Windows subdirectory.  Go here:  http://www.magicaljellybean.com/  Download, extract with WinZip and Run Keyfinder.  Initially, it will return the key of your current operating system.  Click on Tools. Click Load Hive.  Navigate to the Windows directory on the external drive; for example E:\Windows.  Click OK.  The product key should be displayed.  You can then save or print the product key.

    Hope this info helps.

Yeah, more of the first one. I just opened the C drive, took everything, and copied it over to my external drive. but the whole WINDOWS folder is there. So, if what you said applies to me, how can I get the key from there?

...On that note, anyone know how much it is to buy a new product key?
