Probably because at one time you had Flash Player 6 installed and you installed later versions over it.  Please refer to my first reply for solutions.

I believe Esquire is correct in his/her analysis:

Some machines may have both the current Flash 8.0.24 .... along with a "remnant" of an older flash (in my case, 6.0.79).  Based on the existence of the older version, Windows Update was asserting the need for an update.  But upon trying to run the update, it found the newer version, and so the update "failed".

To fix this problem, you just have to remove the old remnant:

on my Win XP SP2 system, I navigated to

C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash

and found the two files:

Flash8a.ocx <===== newer version
Flash.ocx     <===== older version

I deleted the older, flash.ocx , to my recylce bin.

then, when i went to windows update, it said everything was now fine.

P.S.  The preceding fix is specifically for Internet Explorer...   If you use an alternate browser (such as FireFox, Mozilla, Netscape or etc.), you may have to try a different procedure... because Firefox uses a plug-in for Flash, while  IE uses an ActiveX control for Flash.

Thanks for your response.  I followed the procedure you mentioned and sent Flash.ocx to the Recycle bin and left Flash8a.ocx intact.  I then went to Windows Update. It is still telling me to install the update 'Security Update for Flash Player (KB913433)' and there is also a yellow shield-shaped icon in the bottom right-hand corner of the Taskbar which represents the above.  How do I get rid of the update and the icon or do I just ignore?  I re-started my computer to effect the deletion of the older Flash version, but it did not eliminate the existence of the security update.

Did you click on the URLs I posted my first reply?  The instruction from Microsoft is to remove both Flash.ocx and Swflash.ocx.  You can also rid of the security patch in Windows Update - read the article connected by the first URL.

The alternative is to remove your current Flash Players (old and new) then install the latest version from Adobe.com (now owner of Macromedia) - click on the 2nd URL for instructions.

Thanks for your response.  I was just about to write you to say I had since deleted file Swflash.ocx and all is o:k now.  Sorry I didn't zero in on this before.
