I have tried extracting msvcrt.dll by using the Recovery Console, renaming msvcrt.dll in other folders and copying msvcrt.dll to the systems folder, all with no success.
I don't appreciate what the offset error signifies in crashing explorer so don't have a brilliant answer. Do you have any programs/driver that have a version of msvcrt.dll running when explorer crashes ?
If so, prevent it from running using the msconfig command and uncheck it under the Startup tab. You may want to run the SFC to replace any deleted/quarantined system files. The command from Start/Run is:
sfc /scannow (note space)
If you are familiar with registry editing change the value of sfcdisable from 0 to 4. Do this only if when running this command you get a prompt to insert your XP cd. In which case press "Cancel".
