i ran some windows upgrades yesterday and lost my sound.i have a xps 410 with vista ultamate.it has internal sound which is enabled.i have the most currant drivers.when i check it in device manager it says its working properly and if i try to update the drivers it says they are current.if i open the speaker it says no audio devices installed.i spent 4-5 hours online with a dell tech who was unable to resolve the problem.what should i do?just buy a new sound blaster?will it even work?the internal device is a sigma tel high def audio codec.i really hope someone can help. thanks
When you choose Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound, what do you see when you select the Sound tab? I expect you would see at least a speaker icon and the heading Speakers / Headphones with SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC underneath.
Also when you select the Classic View in Control Panel and choose System > Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers, do you see the SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC. If so check its properties by right clicking on it and choosing Properties.
I recommend that you do a Windows System Restore to a time well prior to installing the Windows upgrades. This will not affect your data files.
Click Start and type System Restore in the Start Search box at the bottom of the panel. Then click on the System Restore icon at the top of the panel. Click Continue to get past User Account Control. Then click Next and follow the prompts.
Provided you back up all your data files (documents, pictures and so on) on external storage I think you can try using Windows System Restore to revert to Vista HP. In the worst case you should be able to do a Dell Factory Image Restore to Vista HP.
