I just bought a Dell Inspiron 1000 "Enhanced Performance" laptop. I have never had a laptop before or used Windows XP.
I have always preferred Netscape over IE. I downloaded and installed Netscape 7.2 on my laptop. At first the only problem was that Netscape wouldn't save my preferences. I would set up Netscape the way I wanted it and the next time I went in my settings were not saved. I went into the folder C:\Documents and Settings \ user_name \ Application \ Data \ Mozilla \ Profiles \ profilename \ and found the name.slt folder where all the user settings are saved. I made sure that none of the files or the folder were set as read only. I also checked the file prefs.js to make sure that Netscape is my default browser. Now not only am I still not only able to save my user sittings but each time I use Netscape I find that I have a prefs-1.js, prefs-2.js and so on. What's going on here? Is there some other software that is preinstalled from Dell that would conflict with Netscape? When my laptop shipped it came with McAfee. I uninstalled this and installed Norton System Works 2005. But I was having the problem with before I uninstalled McAfee and after I installed Norton System Works 2005. I think the settings in Netscape are being changed when I boot up the laptop and not when I exit Netscape. Has anyone else had a problem with Netscape?
I have an older desktop that I built myself. It has Windows 98 and Netscape 7.1 and have never had any problems with it at all.
I've had no problem with 7.2 on a Dell 8300. It was not an initial installation, however, and I uninstalled the old (7.01?) version before installing the new. You might try creating a new test profile, make some changes in it and see if they hold when you restart.

Thanks for the reply. I did post on one Netscape board and have had a ton of suggestions. How ever I am still having the same problem. I was thinking maybe something (application) that Dell pre installs that has the conflict with Netscape.
I did create a new user profile.
I uninstalled Netscape and downloaded again, reinstalled.
I deleted the old localstore.rdf and logged out letting Netscape create a new one.
I checked the .slt folder and all of the files in it to make sure that none were checked as read only. None were
I made my changes logged out of Netscape and made the file prefs.js as a read only hoping that it would not change but it did and now I have many prefs-1.js -2 and so on up to prefs-8.js.
I'm at a loss as to what I should try next. Now when I login I get an error and I have to exit Netscape and start over. The second time it goes through.
