I recently networked a new Inspiron 1525 (running Vista HP) to a Dimension 4550 desktop (running XPpro) via a Dlink DIR655 wireless router. Have a slight issue. The Desktop (I assume) is probably the master browser since it is left on most of the time and the 1525 is set to sleep/standby OR is turned OFF. The thing is that when the 1525 awakes or is turned ON and re-establishes a connection to the network neither the 1525 nor the 4550 can navigate to a shared file/folder. The pop up window error: "WORKGROUP" is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. The following error is found in the event log: The browser was unable to retrieve a list of servers from the browser master \\ME on the network \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_ (\\ME = the 1525)
The only workaround I have used up until now is to stop and restart the Computer Browser sevice (which I assume is "cycling"). Once restarted everything is fine.
In the past when I've seen problems like this it is because the two computers have differing configurations for the network. The easiest solution to this is to run the Network Setup Wizard (aka "Set up a home or small office network") on both computers at the same time, giving them the exact same configuration ("I connect to the internet through a residential gateway" which is your router). The only exception to "exact same configuration" is that each computer has to have a unique Computer Name (e.g., Desktop and Notebook). Once that is done, reboot both computers and wait about a minute for them to finish starting up the networking services. If it is configured right, they should be able to see each other (assuming you don't have a firewall on either one blocking the connection).
I have no problem right now "seeing" each other on the network. The problem surfaces when the 1525 goes into standby or is turned off. The 1525 has assumed the role of master browser and I need to apply that title to the 4550. Would running the wizard solve this issue?
Well, that didn't work. After rebooting I waited about 10min then rebooted the 1525 and still had to stop and restart the comp browser (on the 4550) to connect to the 1525. This is what's leading me to believe it is a vista related issue.
Like I've stated above this will work fine until the 1525 goes into stanby and disconnects.
Upon reconnection of the 1525 the 4550 CB will have to be manually cycled.
I'm just relieved at this point that I'm not dealing with an office environment. At this point I'd have everyone reformatting and reinstalling just to bide the time :]
I'm not sure if the Network Setup Wizard would help that or not.
In the past when I've personally run into problems with the browse-master selection, I powered off all the involved computers then powered on the one I wanted to be the master first. Once it was up and able to connect to the internet I would then power on all of the other computers. When the others start up the check the network for a master, and seeing it do not set themselves as the master.
On a similiar note, I have taken half a dozen systems (test lab) and when I would power them up together a random system would end up being the master, which played havoc with file sharing. That situation is what prompted me to use the method detailed above to "specify" a master system on the local network.
There are probably better ways to do it, but it worked for what I as doing at the time.
According to the network map on the 1525 (Vista) the 4550 (XPpro) can not be placed in the map. According to the MS website it mentions LLTD, but this box has SP3 which (I think) installed this already so it must be something else. I'll keep this thread updated.
Well, the 1525 has the LLTD protocol installed, but I don't see it installed on the 4550. So, I tried to install it and the popup window states that SP3 is installed and not needed.
Have you tried powering down both computers, starting the 4550 and giving it 10 - 15 minutes to realise it is in charge of the network, and then starting the 1525?
