Problems after Installing Windows XP Home Edition

Wanted to see if anyone could help. I just upgraded my 2nd PC [Dimension XPS T500] from Windows 98 to XP home edition. Now under My Computer neither my CD/DVD or my zip drive are visible. And the CD/DVD drive will not open [light is blinking].

When I first installed XP, they were visible & everything worked fine. After shutting down & rebooting, they are no longer there. No hardware or software changes prior to installing XP.

Maybe you should try and reinstalling your Windows XP and see if that works.  If that doesn't work try contacting Mircosoft.

Did you do a clean install? If not, you should. You can use the XP upgrade cd to do a clean install. Just show your Win 98 cd when asked for proof. Make sure the XP cd was purchased just for the computer you're installing it on. You cannot reuse one that has been installed on another computer. BTW, a T500 could possibly have incompatible hardware. At the very least you'll need new XP drivers. Run the Upgrade Advisor on the XP cd to check for problems with hardware/software.

I did perform a clean install with a new XP CD. The problem is that before I could install the drivers the CD/DVD and zip drives disappeared.

Also there is only a driver for the CD/DVD drive but not for the zip drive. Any other ideas?

Maybe put the drivers and INF files for them on a floppy and press F6 when given the 3 seconds to do so near the beginning of installation?
