Problems worse after re-installing XP

?Hello,

I have XP on a Dell P-4, which is over a year old now and no longer supported I believe.  I was
having some problems (like having to reboot about every other time I used the computer) so I
decided to re-install XP(possible mistake #1).

While it was going thru its motions, it stopped and said:
“The software you are installing for this hardware: BCM v.92 56K Voicemodem, has not passed
Windows Logo Testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP.  Microsoft strongly
recommends that you stop this installation now and contact the hardware vendor for software that
has passed Windows logo testing.”  I elected to continue anyway (Mistake #2?) since I assumed
there wouldn’t be a problem since it came pre-installed with my Dell.   The modem has not
worked since.  I tried removing and re-installing it from my Dell modem CD, and I tried using
Standard Modem - 56K.  No go.  I tried re-installing my Juno ISP software - no help.  When I
tried to run Juno it said “Unable to connect using modem option.  Ensure DUN software is
installed.”  Now it justs says “Communicaton Error (711)” because it won’t even let me add the
modem driver back on.

Another problem: It also stopped during re-install and said: “unregmp2.exe  Entry Point Not
Found.   The procedure entry point GetIUMS could not be located in the dynamic link library
MSDART.DLL.”  The only choice was “OK”, so I ended up hitting enter about 300 times before
the message finally went away - I’m not sure if my hitting enter 300 times caused it to go away or
not.  I don’t know what if any this problem caused, or why it appeared in the first place.  All I
know is besides not having a working driver for my modem, my Norton Anti-Virus does not
open, and other quirky things seem to be going on.  I can’t even tell if I have a virus.

XP is sooo slow.

HELP!  A detailed response would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jeff

There are four Dimension Model P___  types so which is yours.?
Did you try a Clean Install from boot of XP CD.?
You could also download the latest Modem Driver from DELL "Downloads" link at top of Forum for your Computer Model/type.

Use the below links for info on a Clean Install then install Drivers from CD with Windows XP started , just insert Driver CD.

I have shown  Supersite & Elder Geek links last as they assumes Clean Install status so doesn't include step to delete existing partition  & so achieve Clean Install status.
(Clean Install status , ie: no Windows OS installed on HD).

Use  this link & select XP Home or PRO then method , ie: Used Hard Drive , Multi_Page has text & large pictures of Clean Install.
    http://www.windowsreinstall.com/

Use this link for Clean Install of XP , if you click on Pictures they Expand for easy view
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html (Delete existing partition at step 10b for Clean Install)

or use this link ( *** Delete existing partition at step 5 for Clean Install ***)
    http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp

or use this link (***Delete exiting partition at Fig 06 for a Clean Install**)
    http://www.theeldergeek.com/xp_home_install_-_graphic.htm

Clean Install deletes existing partition (like FDISK)  &  Formats HD during Install of Windows XP  from XP CD.
Set BIOS to use CD-ROM as 1st boot device usually by pressing "F2" key during boot (startup),
for some Computers press "Del" key
Re-start Computer & when message "Press any key to boot from CD" shows do it & let subsequent messages "Press any key...." time out to Windows setup.

I have BCM V92 56K modem (OEM), that I use for sending faxes. There was recently an updated driver (v. 3.5.25.0) on Windows update; if the modem has been recognised by Windows, Windows update scan should, I think, offer you that and it will presumably be MS authenticated. I don't often install the driver updates offered by Windows update, but that one worked fine.

    You could also look at

It tells you amongst other things how to get at the modem troubleshooter in XP help and support
