That's as descriptive as I can get in the subject title. I have a problem with my computer that started a few weeks ago, but I haven't had the chance to really sit down and deal with it until now (holidays). I'm running XP, version 2002, service pack 2. My computer was on while I was at work, and when I came home there was an error on the screen. I don't remember what it was, but when I restarted I was prompted to select whether I wanted to start in safe mode. I did, but Windows would not start. I put in the XP installation disk and was able to load XP, and do a restore point, but it's like XP is not recognizing any of my settings. I tried choosing an even earlier restore point, same thing. Firefox can remember cookies, but a lot of my programs don't work (Media Player, MSN), and when I try to install something new or update a software, it doesn't work. Settings for the taskbar, desktop, My Computer, Word etc are forgotten each time I restart my computer. I keep getting a notice that new updates are ready for my computer they they are never installed successfully. Hopefully I can get some help. Thanks!

Sounds like your user profile is corrupt and Windows is loading a temporary profile. A notice to this effect should present itself when Windows is started. Best thing to do would be to restart your computer in Safe Mode, and follow the instructions that Microsoft gives for copying a corrupt user profile to a new user profile. See this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318011 and this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151/
Please note that you MUST copy Outlook Express settings and messages to the new user profile BEFORE deleting the corrupt user profile.
Ok, that sort of worked. I can't copy over the My Pictures and My Music folders. If I switch to that corrupt profile, I can access those folders. I can't access those folders or copy them over if I am logged into another profile.
So is the Administrator profile only accessible via safe mode? That would explain why I didn't see it on the login screen when I booted up normally. I was able to move those folders over to the new profile, and I think everything is working fine, but I will take a look at that link tonight. I'll let you know if everything is working. Thanks!
You should be able to login as Administrator (not an administrative user) in Safe Mode, right click on those folders and give full access rights to the Administrators group which should include the new user you created. See this for the procedures to do that:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421
Ok, so I did end up doing what you said. I did get access to those other files to move them over. But I still think things are wrong. Ever since then certain programs don't remember their settings. Gmail and Windows Live never remember my user name and password each time I log on. I set up my start menu a certain way and those settings are not kept. One thing that really bothers me is that the items in the programs folder do not show up. I have to manually expand by clicking on that little down arrow each time.
